The Serious Academic: Integrating Philosophy into Graduate Education

Beginning August 4th, we will launch a 30-post blog series exploring the role of philosophy in graduate education. We used our personal experiences in working with hundreds of graduate students to address our concern over how many students view philosophy. The series spans 15 weeks and designed as an introductory discourse on philosophy. This series begins with five posts in which we argue why philosophy must be treated as an essential, rather than peripheral, concern for any serious academic.

At the heart of this series, we examine four pillars of philosophy in research. First, we turn to ontology, asking what defines the nature of reality in your chosen field. Do you believe truth resides in objective, measurable patterns, or does reality exist as a tapestry of human interpretation and social construction? Next, we explore axiology: what values drive your research choices, why does a specific problem matter, and whose interests does your inquiry serve? From there, we address epistemology: how do you come to know what you know, and do you privilege sensory data, logic, or lived experience? Finally, we move to methodology, investigating how you translate these core beliefs into actionable research steps. We developed Quester specifically to help graduate students navigate these complex philosophical considerations.
